This semester’s project was to design a middle school for the Environmental Charter School of Pittsburgh. The Environmental Charter School ( ECS ) teaches students not just academics but to also be well rounded citizens. The Charter teaches about the physical and holistic environment that the students are in. This design was created to enhance this experience by creating as many learning opportunities as possible.
The school is designed with a series of balconies that are intentionally placed for different learning experiences. Internally, the schools atrium enables the students to learn from one another; having younger students look to the upper years allowing the older students to mentor the students bellow them. This is further encouraged by a series of breakout spaces all over the building that students from all years are able to work in together.
